In the activity depicted here, designed for an 8th grade ELA class, I wanted students to interpret a short story, “Howard Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut, through Marxist and feminist lenses. In a prior class, we discussed some of the main tenants, in a general fashion, of Marxism and feminism. And I provided them with a set of questions, which I regarded as central to both schools of thought. What was expected in the activity, was for them to use their understanding of Marxism and feminism, and the questions I provided them with, to help them interpret a story, and understand it in a different way. They were to record a podcast with a partner in which they had a conversation regarding their interpretations of the short story. After listening to their podcasts I provided feedback to them regarding their podcasts and their interpretations. This activity was done and organized via Good Drive, MyBigCampus, and Vocaroo, the latter of which my students used to record their podcasts and create a shareable link. |
